Message from the President |
First let me apologize for not being at last months
meeting. While you were enjoying some great food and friends,
I was visiting my boys in Indiana. Between the kids in
school, family and work commitments, things have been very
chaotic.
Now for the fun --- there is so much coming up, lets enjoy as
much as possible including the big bird little bird picnic. I
know that Al Richmond is hard at work to make this another
success. We have a cruise for the first Saturday in November,
and then the November meeting is scheduled for a cruise to Chain O
Lakes just north of Livingston. These cruises are always fun
and maybe some "Bill" will diesel up their car or some "Dave" will
try to start his car in a creative way, or maybe some other member
will give us something else to add to our list of quirks.
Keep Drivin' (and hopefully I can make it to some of the
upcoming events)

The September meeting was held
at the Zydeco Kitchen in Pearland. I was unable to attend, so
I don't know what happened. Chances are, though, if I was able
to attend, I still wouldn't know what happened. Come to the
October meeting for a reading of the
minutes. |

| CTCI Director |
You should have received your CTCI ballot in the last issue of
your Early Bird. I would highly recommend that you vote for
Sandra Hood for Director at Large. She is one of the most
qualified TBird fanatics around. --Hugh
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My name is Sandra Hood and I am announcing my
candidacy for CTCI Director-at-Large. If you are a member of
CTCI, sometime this month you will be receiving your Early Bird and
I would like to ask you to read my resume and if you feel that I am
qualified to represent the members of CTCI on the Board of
Directors, then I would appreciate your vote and support in the
upcoming election. I have been a member of CTCI and my local
club, the Big D Little Birds of Dallas since 1979 and a member of
the San Antonio Club for several years and served as CTCI
Director of Region 5 for four years and FoMoCo Liaison Officer for
one year. I have attended every board meeting in California
since 1991. My husband, CL Hood, and I have driven our T-bird to all
of the international conventions and many regionals since
1980. I am active in concours judging and have attained a
Senior Master level. It is my desire to work toward
improved and more specific goals that will enhance CTCI's members
and chapters and promote good communication between the board of
directors and all CTCI members. I strongly feel that all CTCI
members be informed of the Board of Directors' decisions throughout
the year. I would like to see CTCI provide an updated roster
to every member each year instead of every two years and I would
like to see the return of the chapter newsletter contest.
These are just a few issues but most important I will represent you
and/or your club with ideas to continue making CTCI an organization
that we are proud to be a member of. Again, I would
appreciate your support and vote but please take time to vote for
the candidate of your choice.
| West Texas Road Race--approved
by TXDOT on July 14!! |
If you are a fan of racing and crave
the chance to participate in an inaugural event, the John Foster
West Texas Open Road Race can use your help on October 19.
With more than 200 volunteer positions available, race coordinators
are looking to fill positions from gate guards to helping with
registration for the race. Since the race will not be open to
public viewing, "The only way to really, really, really watch the
race is to be a gate guard," said Carolyn Coleman, volunteer
coordinator. Gate guards are required to be over 18 years old,
though children may accompany an adult. The duty of the gate guard
will be make sure traffic will not pass through the 97.55 miles of
the route the race will use. "This is the second race in Texas
and it's the most unique," shared John Green, the race
director. The open road race begins with a staggered
start and will begin in Spraberry. Then it heads to Rankin and ends
in Midland. The course heads south on Farm-to-Market Road
1379, then west on FM 1787, followed by a trek south on State
Highway 349. Competitors will spend some time in Rankin for lunch
before shooting up Highway 349 toward Midland. These roads will be
closed most of the day thanks to permission obtained by Texas
Department of Transportation.
The event was named after John Foster, a 60-year-old entrepreneur
and motor sports enthusiast who died of a heart attack in November
2002. "If you could see the John's face when he stepped out of
the car, there was no doubt he loved racing," shared Ms.
Coleman. The open race logo not only includes Foster's name,
but one of his favorite emblems of the pastime -- the checkered
flags. Foster also had a role in trying to bring a open road race to
the area. Genora Young, event coordinator, recalled although
Foster was a busy man, he always had time to slow down and talk
about racing. "He was in a big hurry and he said, 'I only have
a minute,' and I said I want to talk about the open road race," said
Ms. Young. "He slumped back in his chair and said, 'Speak.'"
The classes available to race include street rod (85-95 mph),
touring (100-110 mph), grand touring (115-125 mph), grand sport
(130-150 mph), super sport (155-170 mph) and unlimited categories
(170+ mph). Coordinators said it doesn't matter the type of
car entered in the race, as long as it and the driver meets safety
regulations. Ground school will be available for novice drivers Oct.
16.
"There is nothing like the sound and feel from a car going by you
at 200 mph," said Green. Proceeds from the race will go toward
the Midland Convention and Visitor's Bureau Sports Commission. Other
events scheduled for the weekend include a car show and parade on
Oct. 18.
For those interested in volunteering for the event, please call
Ms. Coleman at 432-683-3381.
A parish priest was being
honored at a dinner on the twenty-fifth anniversary of his arrival
in that parish. A leading local politician, who was a member of the
congregation, was chosen to make the presentation and
give a little speech at the dinner, but he was delayed in traffic,
so the priest decided to say his own few words while they
waited.
"You will understand," he said, "the seal of the
confessional can never be broken. However, I got my first
impressions of the parish from the first confession I heard here. I
can only hint vaguely about this, but when I came here twenty-five
years ago I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place. The
very first chap who entered my confessional told me how he had
stolen a television set, and when stopped by the police,
had almost murdered the officer. Further, he told me he had
embezzled money from his place of business and had an affair with
his boss's wife. I was appalled. But as the days went on I knew that
my people were not all like that, and I had, indeed come to a fine
parish full of understanding and loving people."
Just as the
priest finished his talk, the politician arrived full of apologies
at being late. He immediately began to make the presentation and
give his talk. "I'll never forget the first day our parish priest
arrived in this parish," said the politician. "In fact, I had the
honor of being the first one to go to him in confession." |
