We're looking for cool
weather! |
| A
Message from the President |
Hopefully you have all enjoyed your summer and ready for the
cool weather to come. Well we can dream - can't
we. Don't forget that this month is the Kolache Festival
in Halletsville, if you have not already done so, if you plan on
attending please contact the Vickers so that you will be
official. At this months meeting I will update everyone
on next months Poker run and the Christmas Party. We will be
having the Christmas party at a new location, with a new caterer -
As always it will be a fun event. Mark your calendars for
December 4th, the first Saturday in December. We will
need to provide our own tables and chairs so if anyone has a contact
for these please contact me so that we will not have to rent
them.
The Poker run will be October 16th. We still need a
few prizes so if you know a local merchant or restaurant that will
provide us some gift certificates or other stuff we can use as
prizes please contact me. We also will need a few more
non driving volunteers to hand out cards along the
route. The run will more than likely end in Galveston
and the ride back to Houston will be a new moon cruise in that the
new moon is set for the evening of the 14th.
The attendance at the summer meetings has been sparse, lets all
try our best to make it to this months meeting.
Keep drivin'

The August meeting was held on at Hickory Hollow. We had a
nice turnout and enjoyed the food. The entire Markel crowd was

| Prayer Request for
Joshua Jette |
| For those of
you who don't know, Joshua Jette is the son of Jim Jette, who has
joined us for Saturday breakfast several times. Joshua joined
us, before he left for Iraq. Please keep the Jette family in
your prayers.
Joshua has arrived at Landstuhl Hospital in Germany and has come
out of heavy sedation; they will not feed him until they figure out
how they will handle redoing his While on patrol in Husaybah at
520pm on 8.19.04 Joshua was struck by an IED. His right leg is
shredded and chipped at multiple places on the bone. Stomach and
abdomen torn open,; right elbow ripped open. 50-100 shrapnel pellets
in his face and arms and hands. He lost massive amounts of blood
prior to Baghdad MASH unit arrival. He was in total shock.. A sniper
shot him in the calf after he went down. Three-four other guys
wounded lightly. The marines took specific action after Joshua down.
He was one of their favorites. The point man who was one of Joshua's
squad got lost and led them down a wrong street in Husaybah.
Neither, Joshua or we were surprised that he was wounded; he has had
too many close calls in the past. His luck ran out 7 days before the
end of his duty in the war zone. He is just becoming aware of his
vulnerability and very distressed that his fellow marines are no
longer around to protect him. He has asked that we come as quickly
as we can. We are leaving tomorrow on the first flight to Frankfurt.
Landstuhl is approximately 90 miles SW of Frankfurt. Thanks for all
your thoughts and prayers We expect 3-4 weeks surgery and
recuperation in Germany and subsequent transfer to Walter Reed
Medical in Wash DC.

A
man in Topeka, Kansas decided to write a book about churches around
the country. He started by flying to San Francisco and started
working east from there. Going to a very large church, he began
taking photographs and making notes. He spotted a golden telephone
on the vestibule wall and was intrigued with a sign, which read,
"Calls: $10,000 a minute." Seeking out the pastor he asked about
the phone and the sign. The pastor answered that this golden
phone is, in fact, a direct line to Heaven and if he pays the
price he can talk directly to God. The man thanked the pastor and
continued on his way. As he continued to visit churches in
Seattle, Tulsa, St. Louis, Chicago, Milwaukee, and around the
United States, he found more phones, with the same sign, and the
same answer from each pastor.
Finally, he arrived in Texas.
Upon entering a church in Houston, behold - he saw the usual
golden telephone.
But this time, the sign read, "Calls: 35
cents." Fascinated, he asked to talk to the pastor, "Reverend, I
have been in cities all across the country and in each church I
have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a
direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but in the
other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads
only 35 cents a call. Why?"
The pastor, smiling benignly,
replied, "Son, you're in Texas now......It's a local
call." | |
