This picture was taken on our recent cruise across the Bolivar Ferry.  I had pulled up very (too) close to Bill McBride, and when he started Marilyn, this is what happened.  Perhaps some of that diesel lingers on...

Moulton Jamboree, Parade, and Pie Contest
We had a wonderful time at the Moulton Jamboree.  I only had 32 pies to taste this year, as opposed to the 50-some-odd from last year.  We only had one that was really nasty, and caused one of my fellow judges to jump up from the table and run to spit it out.  Hey, she wanted to go first.  In the follow-up from Estalee Bullis, the pie queen, we learned that almost $16,000 was raised to fund scholarship for local kids.  The parade was fast, the day was not too blazing hot, and we all had fun.  Thanks to all who participated.  Mark the last full weekend in July 2004 for a fun time.

September Meeting
The September meeting place will be at the Zydeco Kitchen in Pearland on Sunday, September 21, at 1:00 pm.  The meeting will start around 2:00 pm.  The address is 1300 Broadway.  The telephone # is 281 648-6500.  The directions are:  Take I-45 South to Dixie Farm Road.  Go West 4 miles to Highway 518 (Broadway) and turn left (South) for 1/2 mile.  The Zydeco Kitchen will be on the right.  This place was endorsed by Bill Perry so it must be good.  We will be in the "Liquor Room".

July Meeting

The June meeting was held at Chammps Americana Restaurant in the Galleria area.  The food was good, the meeting was exciting, and the crowd was large.

August Meeting

The August meeting was held at the Hickory Hollow Restaurant on Heights Blvd.  We had a nice crowd attending.  It was a beautiful day, and the car turnout was superb.

CTCI Director
My name is Sandra Hood and I am announcing my candidacy for CTCI Director-at-Large.  If you are a member of CTCI, sometime this month you will be receiving your Early Bird and I would like to ask you to read my resume and if you feel that I am qualified to represent the members of CTCI on the Board of Directors, then I would appreciate your vote and support in the upcoming election.  I have been a member of CTCI and my local club, the Big D Little Birds of Dallas since 1979 and a member of the San Antonio Club for several years and served as CTCI Director of Region 5 for four years and FoMoCo Liaison Officer for one year.  I have attended every board meeting in California since 1991. My husband, CL Hood, and I have driven our T-bird to all of the international conventions and many regionals since 1980.  I am active in concours judging and have attained a Senior Master level.   It is my desire to work toward improved and more specific goals that will enhance CTCI's members and chapters and promote good communication between the board of directors and all CTCI members.  I strongly feel that all CTCI members be informed of the Board of Directors' decisions throughout the year.  I would like to see CTCI provide an updated roster to every member each year instead of every two years and I would like to see the return of the chapter newsletter contest.  These are just a few issues but most important I will represent you and/or your club with ideas to continue making CTCI an organization that we are proud to be a member of.   Again, I would appreciate your support and vote but please take time to vote for the candidate of your choice.

West Texas Road Race--approved by TXDOT on July 14!!
If you are a fan of racing and crave the chance to participate in an inaugural event, the John Foster West Texas Open Road Race can use your help on October 19.  With more than 200 volunteer positions available, race coordinators are looking to fill positions from gate guards to helping with registration for the race.  Since the race will not be open to public viewing, "The only way to really, really, really watch the race is to be a gate guard," said Carolyn Coleman, volunteer coordinator.  Gate guards are required to be over 18 years old, though children may accompany an adult. The duty of the gate guard will be make sure traffic will not pass through the 97.55 miles of the route the race will use.  "This is the second race in Texas and it's the most unique," shared John Green, the race director.   The open road race begins with a staggered start and will begin in Spraberry. Then it heads to Rankin and ends in Midland.  The course heads south on Farm-to-Market Road 1379, then west on FM 1787, followed by a trek south on State Highway 349. Competitors will spend some time in Rankin for lunch before shooting up Highway 349 toward Midland. These roads will be closed most of the day thanks to permission obtained by Texas Department of Transportation.

The event was named after John Foster, a 60-year-old entrepreneur and motor sports enthusiast who died of a heart attack in November 2002.  "If you could see the John's face when he stepped out of the car, there was no doubt he loved racing," shared Ms. Coleman.  The open race logo not only includes Foster's name, but one of his favorite emblems of the pastime -- the checkered flags. Foster also had a role in trying to bring a open road race to the area.  Genora Young, event coordinator, recalled although Foster was a busy man, he always had time to slow down and talk about racing.  "He was in a big hurry and he said, 'I only have a minute,' and I said I want to talk about the open road race," said Ms. Young. "He slumped back in his chair and said, 'Speak.'"

The classes available to race include street rod (85-95 mph), touring (100-110 mph), grand touring (115-125 mph), grand sport (130-150 mph), super sport (155-170 mph) and unlimited categories (170+ mph).  Coordinators said it doesn't matter the type of car entered in the race, as long as it and the driver meets safety regulations. Ground school will be available for novice drivers Oct. 16.

"There is nothing like the sound and feel from a car going by you at 200 mph," said Green.  Proceeds from the race will go toward the Midland Convention and Visitor's Bureau Sports Commission. Other events scheduled for the weekend include a car show and parade on Oct. 18.

For those interested in volunteering for the event, please call Ms. Coleman at 432-683-3381.

Update on Jim Jette's son, Joshua

Young Joshua Starts the Trek Home

8-26-03

This past Sunday was different as he headed out of town in his Humvee; the kids ran along side and tried to touch him. They knew he was leaving; heading home. The transition to the Poles administering Karbala was complete. A bunch of Marines had taken 150 soccer balls and tossed them out to the kids in the streets of Karbala the day before so there was heightened interest as his convoy moved thru the streets. The adults are still tending to stand-off. The plan was for the 3rd battalion 7th Regiment Lima Company to board a chopper for Al Kut and then catch a military version of the C-130 back to Kuwait.  Joshua noticed as a big difference in the airport as they approached Kut. During the initial battle, he and the Iraqis had done considerable damage to the runways and ancillary support systems a scant 4 months before. All seemed to be repaired.

Once back in Kuwait, it was still keep your weapon by your side; just don’t chamber a round. Keep your ammo in your pocket. It was now the first taste of USA life… telephones to set-up dates back in the US, Subway sandwich stores( long lines, but who cares!) and air conditioning!!

Joshua is due to lift out of Kuwait on or before September 2nd enroute to USMC Twenty Palms Base in California. Once back to Twenty nine Palms there will be more housekeeping for 3-4 days and parting with his constant companion (M-16- A3) which he slept and went to the toilet with since leaving the US last April.  He said he’s hoping for his aircraft lay-over to the US to be in Ireland so he can have a cold beer. If they lay-over in Greece; it’s not good because they don’t like US troops there.

His most urgent concerns when calling home from Kuwait was how much money has he earned and that he does not have any civilian clothes to wear on his 1st 48 hour pass when he gets back. He has already selected two buddies that he is going to bunk with when he returns. A friend from Idaho and another from Saginaw Michigan.  Because of lack of facilities, they will be bunking with the 3rd BN 4th MAR until they can build barracks for his group. Joshua went to war with the 3rd BN 4th MAR so he has some lifelong friends he hopes to look up.

He has been told that he will not be deployed for a year but that was already seasoned with talk that he may be moved to the Mexican Border at CA or TX for support of anti-drugs and aliens operations.

The phone call was a mixture of talking to a man and the ordinary 19 year old that left us just 5 months ago to do some extraordinary things.  But he was sure happy.  We hope he will be released to come home by mid September. We plan to fly out for his 48 hour leave to give him a hug and Thank You……

Jim Jette

Tail Lights
A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. She considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, but her father was a staunch Republican.

One day she was challenging her father on his beliefs and his opposition to high taxes and welfare programs. He stopped her and asked how she was doing in school. She answered that she had a 4.0 GPA, but it was really tough. She had to study all the time and never had time to go out and party.  She didn't even have time for a boyfriend and didn't really have many college friends because of spending all her time studying. On top of that, the part-time job her father insisted she keep left absolutely no time for anything else.

He asked, "How is your friend Mary?" She replied that Mary was barely getting by. She had a 2.0 GPA, never studied, but was very popular on campus, didn't have a job, and went to all the parties. She was always complaining about not having any money, but didn't want to work.  Why, she often didn't show up for classes because she was hung over.

Dad then asked his daughter why she didn't go to the dean's office and request that 1.0 be taken off her 4.0 and given to her friend who only had a 2.0. That way they would both have a respectable 3.0 GPA. Then she could also give her friend half the money she'd earned from her job so that her friend would no longer be broke all the time.

The daughter fired back, "That wouldn't be fair! I worked really hard for my grades and money, and Mary just loafs. Why should her laziness and irresponsibility be rewarded with half of what I've worked so hard for?"

The father slowly smiled and said, "Welcome to the Republican Party!"
