Happy
Valentine's Day!!
| A
Message from the President |
| My plan for this year is have more driving
time. The board of directors and other members recently met to
discuss the first half of the year. The plan is to have at
least one road trip a month in addition to the monthly
meeting. The road trip will be on a day other than a
Sunday for those that would rather enjoy club activities on other
than a Sunday.
My plan also provides for inclusiveness. I am actively
seeking volunteers to organize our road trips. So if you have
a burning desire to drive to a remote location to look at stuff, eat
or just drive, please give me a call, email me or write me with your
thoughts and commitment to the road show. If you have
ideas of places to go and people to see but do not want to organize
it, that's ok to, but the most important thing is to hear from each
of you as to what you want your club to be doing.
I am looking forward to a fun year and meeting with all of our
members even the ones whose names appear on our membership lists but
who have not participated in recent years.
Lets go driving !

| Huntsville Church of the Holy Rib Cruise |
We will meet
outside the Sears store car repair center at Willowbrook Mall (249)
& FM 1960 @ 9:00 am on Saturday, Feb 15th. Leaving from
Willowbrook Mall we stay on 249 for about 20 minutes, then turn
right on 149. This is a nice 2 lane hwy and in about 15 short
minutes, we will be in Montgomery (this is a trip in itself). This
is our first pit stop (but no shopping, ladies). We take 149 north
into the Sam Houston National Forrest to FM 1375 turn east (right)
to New Waverly and get on 45 north and about 10 minutes later we
will be in Huntsville. The total time of the trip from Willowbrook
is 1hr. 15 min. The total distance is about 68 miles.
On the
way back, you have two choices -- you can go back the way we came or
we can head south on 45 to the Conroe swap meet. After that, you are
on your own or we can head somewhere else as a group.
Please
communicate if you are going to join us . I will have to be in
contact with the Rib Queen and if I don't get it right, we all could
end up on the pit.

| Ford's
100th Anniversary Party and Rt. 66 Cruise |
|
It's official. We are going to wrap our
Rt. 66 cruise in with our trip to Dearborn for Ford's
anniversary. We've been from Tulsa out to Holbrook, AZ.
In June, we'll head back to Tulsa, get on Rt. 66, and take it to
Chicago. From Chicago, we'll head on over to Dearborn.
Make plans to attend. Rt. 66 in a T-Bird is a wonderful
experience. Our hotel of choice in the Dearborn/Detroit area
is the Red Roof Inn-Dearborn. Phone 313-278-9732 or reserve
online at www.redroof.com. The dates
for the anniversary party are June 12-16, 2003. More Rt. 66
details will be forthcoming. It's about 500 miles from Houston
to Tulsa, about 700 miles from Tulsa to Chicago, and about 300 miles
from Chicago over to Dearborn. We're thinking about leaving
Houston on Saturday, June 7, 2003, for our big trip. Dennis
Baetz is working on the details even as we speak!

| January Meeting |
|
The January meeting was held at Logan's Roadhouse on January
19. This was the first meeting for our new president, and we
had one of the largest crowds I've ever seen at a meeting.
There were almost 50 people there, a crowd that rivals our annual
Christmas party. And there were lots of Birds in the parking
lot, as the weather was perfect. Thanks to VP Geary Ashby for
picking our lunch places.

| Salado Weekend |
Salado weekend driving tour
March 14 – 16, 2003
This years driving tour will be to the
Burnett, TX area again. This year we will be doing a tour of
Longhorn Caverns at Longhorn Caverns State Park. Lunch options
after the tour will be open, with a plan for most to continue on to
Llano for lunch at Coopers BBQ. Llano is about 30 miles from
the State Park. Coopers is a ‘first come, first served’ place,
so no reservations are accepted.
The Caverns have an $11.00 fee for a 1 ½
hour guided tour. Parking is free and there is a large parking
lot. There is a souvenir shop and small restaurant in the tour
headquarters building.
I plan to have a different driving route
this year for the run to the Park and the return trip is open.
This will give anyone an opportunity to check out the local antique
stores in the area during the return trip. I will have maps of
the driving route available in the hospitality
room.
The plans for the hospitality room are
developing and the dinner Saturday night will be at the Stagecoach
Inn.
A golf tournament is planned for Friday
if anyone is interested. Contact Robert Goodwin if you wish to
be in the golf tournament. 972-424-0311.

Roadless Rule Update
Off-highway vehicle (OHV) hobbyists and related
businesses should note that an appeals court has reversed a federal
judge's decision to suspend the Clinton Administration's ban on road
building in 58.5 million acres of Forest Service land, while the
court determines the rule's legality. An Idaho judge originally
ruled that the Roadless Rule would likely be overturned because the
Clinton Administration had not provided sufficient opportunity for
public comment and had violated environmental laws. The appeals
court disagreed with this conclusion. This means the Roadless Rule
potentially remains in effect while the Idaho court rules on the
merits of the case.
"This is a battle which is simultaneously being
waged on several different fronts so it may be confusing for the
outside observer to keep track of its status," noted Brian Caudill,
SEMA Action Network director. "The rule is subject to change by the
courts, Congress and regulators. It will be months and possibly
years before the issue is resolved."
The Idaho case has garnered the most attention
but seven other lawsuits have been filed around the country. Cases
in North Dakota and Wyoming are in trial while the other lawsuits
are on hold pending an outcome in the Idaho case. In the latter
instance, the Idaho judge has asked the entire appeals court to
review the reversal decision that was issued by three members of the
appeals court. If the full appeals court stands by its ruling, the
Idaho court will have to rule on the merits of the case and the
Roadless Rule will remain in effect.
Meanwhile, legislation introduced last Congress
to enact the Roadless Rule into law has died. Similar legislation
will likely be reintroduced this Congress and, while it might garner
attention, the legislation would be difficult to pass even in a
Republican-controlled Congress.
Finally, the U.S. Forest Service has been
contacting conservation, recreation and industry groups to help
draft mutually acceptable administrative changes to the rule.
The Forest Service is expected to pursue this option in 2003. Any
rule changes could effectively nullify the lawsuits. SEMA
generally opposes the Roadless Rule because it unfairly locks OHV
hobbyists out of public land.

| ARE YOU THE
WEAKEST LINK?
Below are 4 questions. Answer them instantly. You can't take your
time.
Answer them immediately. No pencil or paper! OK? Let's find out
just how smart and clever you really are. Ready? ... GO!!!
FIRST QUESTION: You are participating in a race. You overtake the
second person. What position are you in?
ANSWER: If you answer that you are first, then you are absolutely
wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you
are second!
Try not to mess up in the next question.
To answer the second question, don't take as much time as you
took for the first question. (You know you took too much time.)
SECOND QUESTION: If you overtake the last person, then you
are...?
ANSWER: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are
wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST person?!
THIRD QUESTION: Very tricky math! Note: This must be done in your
head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.
Take 1000 and add 40 to it.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 30.
Add another 1000.
Now add 20.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 10.
What is the total?
ANSWER: Did you get 5000? The correct answer is actually 4100.
Don't believe it? Check with your calculator! Today is definitely
not your day.
Maybe you will get the last question right?
LAST QUESTION: Mary's father has five daughters: Nana, Nene,
Nini, Nono.
What is the name of the fifth daughter?
ANSWER: Nunu? Nana? Nene? NONO! Of course not. The fifth
daughter's name is Mary. Read the question again.
